Summary
Elastin is a major component of human skin. It closely interacts with dermal collagen fibers. Elastin is the major protein responsible for skin elasticity. It has a half-life > 70 years, which means damaged elastin cannot be replaced during human lifetime. Lip enhancement has gained increasing popularity of the last two decades. Injection of cross-linked hyaluronic acid by well trained and experienced physicians provides good results, high patients satisfaction with a favorable safety profile. Social media have popularized bizarre, overfilled lips. Overfilling bears long-term risks such as accelerated aging, fibrosis, changes in the sensitivity and functionality of the lip muscles due to extrinsic compression of nerves and vessels, and unnatural smile. Patients and physicians should be aware of these adverse events.
