Background: Many patients ask for improvement of the appearance of the jawline, jowl or fat neck, or a combination of these aspects. Facelift, liposuction, BTX-A, fillers, threads, injection-lipolysis and Energy Based Based Devices
Objective: To discuss the possibilities and limitations of liposuction of the jawline and neck.
Methods: Liposuction was performed using Super Tumescent Local Anesthesia and powered or non-powered cannulas. A major criterion for selection of the patients was based on the preference of the patient after extensive explanation of liposuction and all alternative treatment modalities.
Results: Improvement of the contours of the jawline and neck can be reached by liposuction in almost all patients. Neither age, nor the amount of fat influences patient satisfaction. In patients with little or no fat, improvement of the contours of the neck is caused by contraction of the tissues. In case of a fat neck, results look more impressive by both the volume reduction and the contraction, comparable with the tightening after a face-lift. In case of a lipoma, sagging jowls or the wish of old the patient for a tight, liposuction is not a good treatment modality.
Conclusion: Liposuction following a special technique gives impressive results in both a fat and a non-fat neck. In case the fat continues over the jawline, a good demarcation of the jawline can be created.
