The Avelar technique was introduced to reduce complications in Abdominoplasty. Not only the preservation of vascularity but also preservation of the lymphatic system makes the Avelar Technique an attractive alternative for many other body contouring procedures.
Procedures are performed in sedoanalgesia using the tumescent technique. No drains are required and patients are mobilised immediately.
The basic Avelar manoeuver, radical liposuction under the skin to be resected, followed by skin excision only, no undermining, with preservation of the subcutaneous structures, will be demonstrated by video. Endoscopic video after liposuction also demonstrates the preservation of the lymphatic structures.
Many large body contouring procedures are now viable and safe in a day surgery setting due to the Avelar concept. Although many surgeons stay with conventional undermining techniques, the trend is certainly to avoid damage to anatomical structures and reduce complications.
